The Mermaid Variations by Rhys Hughes The Mermaid Variations by Rhys Hughes Feb. 05, 2012 $0.99 16407 words Sample 10%
Author bio:
I am a writer of Fantasy, Speculative Fiction and Magic Realism who often uses comedy and absurdism to examine philosophical issues. I am known for my original ideas, intricate plots and entertaining wordplay! I write short stories, novellas and novels. I have been a writer from an early age. I completed my first proper short story when I was 14. It was called 'The Journey of Mountain Hawk' and I still remember what it was about, even though it no longer exists. None of my early work exists. My earliest surviving short story dates from 1989, and since that time I have embarked on an ambitious project of writing a story cycle consisting of exactly 1000 linked tales. Recently I decided to give this cycle an overall name -- PANDORA'S BLUFF. My main influences are writers such as Italo Calvino, Stanislaw Lem, Boris Vian, Flann O'Brien, Jack Vance and Jorge Luis Borges, all of whom have a very well-developed sense of irony and a powerful imagination. I love irony and satire, not only the 'negative' kind that seeks to undermine some form of injustice but also the 'positive' kind that takes sheer delight in its own playfulness. And yet I am also fully committed to engaging with serious themes. In fact, many years ago, I decided that I should find my own name for the style of writing I like best and the name I came up with was: "Romanti-Cynicism." The main idea behind this new genre is to combine humour and seriousness, to fuse the emotional with the intellectual, the profound with the lighthearted, the unfettered with the precise. My first book was published in 1995 and sold slowly but it seemed to strike a chord with some people. My second, third, fourth, etc, books sold much more strongly as my reputation increased. I have been told that I am a "cult author" and I'm pleased with the description, but obviously I also want to reach out to a wider audience! My twentieth book has just been published and I have many new books due to be released in the next two years.

Laura Roberts is the Michael Corleone of sex writing: every time she tries to get out of the biz, the "family" drags her back in. This time, she's taking the cannoli and leaving the gun, writing her own fictional take on life in the sex trade with her first novel, Naked Montreal. As the author of the quirky "V for Vixen" sex column for one of Montreal's alternative newspapers, Roberts witnessed a variety of sexcapades during her time on the beat. Armed with a degree in Creative Writing from Concordia University, she seamlessly blends fact and fiction to create work that has been described as both sassy and insightful. Naked Montreal brings a new view of this underground city to the surface. Laura currently helms the literary magazine, Black Heart, works as a freelance writer and editor, and blogs about all things literary at her portfolio site, Buttontapper.com. She is currently based in the UK, dreaming of road trips which feature lighthouses heavily. Her love of words is occasionally surpassed by her love for the sea. She has several unfinished bestselling novels stashed in dusty places, but from time to time some of her work will manage to make it all the way here.

From the age of eleven, I knew, whenever any aunts and uncles asked the "What do you want to do when you grow up?" question, the stock replies of jet pilot, train driver, astronaut were never going to be good enough for me. "I want to be a writer", I always said. And, what do you know, I am. Author of several works of licensed fiction, including Doctor Who novels, and novelisations for the BBC's Merlin series, I'm now primarily focused on promoting and developing my own original works, ranging from adult sf, through kids' and Young Adult fiction, as well as books that are downright Evil...

My first written story involved a boy, spear-chucking natives and ended in a dream. It won 1st Prize in the Short Story Contest held for 7th graders. Imagine how bad the others were. Being an avid reader of comic books, SF, mystery and sports stories and thinking that I knew I could do something similar, I took that first story as a push to keep writing. Almost everything I wrote after that I trashed, except for one story my Dad said: "It's good, but you wrote it for yourself, not the reader." From that point on, I knew I could write stories and I learned to write them for more than an audience of one. I've written plenty of stories, some of which were published. I've written seven books, one of which was published with me receiving no credit, as ghost writers know. I've been blogging as Gil The Jenius for several years, but not about writing. I've spent something like 40% of my professional career writing plans, ads, reports, proposals, articles, interviews and scads of other "serious" stuff. And what fiction I did write I kept tucked away, growing older as I focused on other types of writing. Now's the time for it to see the light. Somerset Maugham once said that "If you're waiting to write, you're a waiter, not a writer." Although I still take tips (preferably cash), I'm a writer...fiction now included.

When I was a kid, about 8 yrs. old or so, I would lend at least 25 books at the school library for my summer break. At first my teachers shook their heads in disbelief and they were probably thinking to themselves: he is never going to finish all of those books. But coming back after the summer break, I was always able to give them a detailed review of every single book. Some of those books were trilogies such as Isaac Asimovs "Foundation-" series and "Ringworld." I simply love books and though I like watching a movie just as much as everyone else, reading a book really is something else. By reading a book you construct pictures in your own mind instead of being served by a director. But what I love the most about books is the possibility of finding several layers in the book. Things that you cannot find in a movie can be put into a book, because words can be used in such a way that other kinds of meaning appear or disappear. I write about almost everything and anything, but always with my own speciality of "wry and dry" humor, that is, the kind of humor that attacks a subject head on, but still leaves the reader to think about it. I really hope you will enjoy my books... Wishing you a good reading experience, Per Holbo

The event, known as "Heads versus Feds," began in 2001 and has visited more than 200 colleges in ten years, regularly drawing standing-room crowds. Bob and I are known as "The Ultimate Odd Couple," and have become close friends despite the cultural gap between us. The debate is booked by Wolfman Productions in Connecticut.

That picture isn't me. It's my much-loved Border Collie bitch, who I lost to a spinal tumour in April 2011. She deserves this memorial. I was born a very, very long time ago, very close to my mother in England. Now I live in Wales, which isn't England but is part of the UK. I've written all sorts of stuff, but mostly science fiction. It's sort of believable sci-fi - maybe it can't happen today, but might tomorrow, you know? The sci-fi novels are all on the theme of 'first contact' and the first one is being given away free. You'll have to pay for the others. Sorry. I've got other novels, short stories and things that are supposed to be funny too but whether they are is your decision, right? Some of the books are based on real incidents - I know they are, because they happened to me. There are five in total, I've released two, two are being tidied up and the last one won't be finished for a while yet. If you read one, remember it all happened to me and that I don't mind being laughed at. I'm used to it. A while back I released a free book, 'Top Of The Shop'. (If you're a writer you might want to read it. I'll say no more.) I've since released another one, 'Tea, Drums And Speed'. So now the first sci-fi novel is free, 'Top Of The Shop' is free, and there's a free volume of short stories. I must be mad, giving this stuff away. Mind you, it hasn't stopped me giving away a book of political thoughts. If you're from Wales, or British, or even interested in Welsh politics, it might be worth reading. There's also a free book about some films that appeal to me. You might find it interesting but I thought it would be a bit cheeky to want money for it. Have it on me. There's one little thing I don't understand. Of everything I've put on this site, I think the stories in 'Swift Shifts' are the funniest, yet it's the title that's looked at least often. Why is that, do you think? After a gap of several months I've now added a new three-story volume of funny stories. To balance this, there's a thoroughly miserrable one on its way! A word or two about my pricing strategy might be worthwhile. A lot of people on this site (and I apologise if I've got this wrong) quote prices that are just a bit cheaper than you'd see in a bookstore. I don't do that. Ebooks don't have production or distribution costs, so why should you, the book buyer, have to pay even a tiny share of something that doesn't exist? Isn't it better to spend, say, $3 on three little books than on just one? I want you to enjoy what I've written, and at a realistic cost to you that I can live with. Simple, isn't it? I'll add to this from time to time - there's no point saying everything at once, is there? You'd have no need to come back, would you?

Although I am currently happy and high functioning, I have had a long history of mental illness, including endogenous depression, bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. My book "How to Be Free", for which I used the name Joe Blow, is an articulation of the ideas which have been useful to me in freeing myself from these conditions. If asked whether these ideas have provided me with a secure foundation for emotional stability, happiness and flowering creativity, I would reply, “Well, so far so good.” I also write humorous erotica under the pseudonym Aussiescribbler. In many ways my playful, irreverent and anarchic fiction is another form of expression of the approach to life I advocate in "How to Be Free".
