Now I understand why my muse waited until I was 50 before giving me the nod. Mainstream publishers would never have touched the stuff I write. Years of humiliation and disappointment might have been too much for me to bear, and maybe I would have succumbed to full-blown alcoholism and drug addiction, and ended up by committing suicide. To save me from such a fate my muse held back until technology advanced to the point where I could safely sidestep those obscurantist gatekeepers trying to prevent me from getting to my readers. Now I can write what I like, put it up on Smashwords, and share the contents of my mind with anyone discerning enough to enjoy a certain brand of dark humour.
Deep Into The Hudson by E.J. Doyle Deep Into The Hudson by E.J. Doyle Jan. 12, 2012 $3.99 126603 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
Writing with intentions to present it to other minds has been a personal goal for years. I have relished in it and I have detested it at times, and I have wondered if I should be doing it and I know that I belong committed to such as well, so there is no single day that I rose from slumber as a life-changing, newfangled epiphany stirred into the usual black cup of coffee… No, that came with calendars of inconsistent practice. For years I had kept meager notebooks, all detailing the day’s events, but mostly it was only for the dark or rigid tribulations in which I have often found myself taking part of… the happenings that I would not speak to another about. Eventually, however, I have found that “Everything in moderation, including moderation,” is not simply an axiom, but a verbal remedy to gluttony. The things that I enjoy most are of intangible glories, the things that can never be purchased with physical currency; they are the thoughts of life that open up my eyes to a more profound existence, the concepts that drive the human mind into limitless fields of intellect. I do suppose that decent reads are guilty of such, and perhaps they are often paid for, but in my imagination’s defense, the decent reads are not written with sole intentions to make a monetized profit, and often enough I find that any profits that have accrued are only a side dish to the creation of invaluable thoughts entailing life. I am a writer because it is income to my health, for there are many higher paying jobs that I am capable of working but would never feel nearly as motivated to perform. I have learned this from many years of unemployment, poverty, and ambiguity. At some point, to understand the self one must formulate the self with action opposed to pursue an identity that is not yet developed. And furthermore, to formulate the self properly, one must not work only for its society, but work for the self until each can successfully merge. It is under such drive that I have become satisfied with challenge. I must admit that perhaps it is easier to write for those who are unconventional, for those like myself, as not only has the self broken away from so many who have grouped up and sound as one through similarities, but also because taking risks like such provide an intenseness to write about. I do indeed appreciate what I have and have not accomplished, and I have indeed learned from both sides of the game. Biographically, I’ve spent a fair amount of time adventuring the depths of nature. I am pleased beneath the trees, slinking along the rivers, or exploring the rocks and minerals of mountains. It is through isolation from society that I have done what I think is right, and not what I was supposedly obligated to do, and as a result I now understand the importance of being involved in each aspect. I do explore the options I find, I wrestle with ideas to understand them and I do not believe in censorship, because if the reader wants to read they shall, and if not then than shall not, for people vary within and will only learn more of them selves without expurgation. When I write I hold nothing back and am often enough exasperated in the end. My brain attends mental weight lifting but that does not prove or take claim to any superiority, I know, for there is always something smarter, something stronger, something more, and it is through close competition that I am tickled. In conclusion, sojourning the Eastern Coast of the States has been a thrilling start to something only beginning to shed its metaphorical skin, and in revelation, I do not write to live, but live to write.

I'm currently working on my James Hadley series, the first two books are available for $0.99. The third will hopefully be published in either March or April, but the date keeps getting pushed back so I make no promises. Please have a look at the books, and all feedback is taken into consideration. The cover images for my James Hadley books are just temporary so there is a greater chance they will actually get noticed. I'm currently working on some better covers to replace them, but I'm quite busy so it's taking time. There is a chance there won't be any new covers until after I have published the third James Hadley book. I also feel like I've rushed my James Hadley series, so once I've published the third book I will probably go over all three of them and possibly publish some revised editions. After reading through some of my earlier work I know it's not the best, especially compared to my writing now, so some changes might have to be made. If I don't publish any revised editions, I will probably write a short guide to all the groups of people in the James Hadley universe, because I don't think I've explained it very well, in terms of who's who and how different/similar their world is compared to ours. If you want to ask me any questions about any of my books and stories, or to just tell me what you think of them, please feel free to email me at jameshadleylindseyskye@gmail.com.

Uncle Vincent by TJ Seitz Uncle Vincent by TJ Seitz Oct. 26, 2011 Free! 6049 words Read a sample
Author bio:
Fantasy Bio: The day TJ Seitz turned 43 he bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle and laptop computer. The next day he woke up, got his kids on the school bus, kissed his wife good-bye, went to work and quit his job. By 9AM he was on his way to Burlington Vermont where he met up with the 18 year old daughter of a woman he dated in college and headed for the Florida Keys. Today TJ Seitz lives on the Caribbean Island of Martinique with his young lover where he runs a small computer repair shop that caters to tourists and locals. After hours and weekends TJ can be found patronizing local cafes with his laptop or debating island politics over a bottle of cheap rum. Reality Bio: On the surface TJ Seitz appears to be a quintessential middle aged male. He’s married to his HS sweetheart and lives with his family (3 kids, a dog, 5 cats, 4 guinea pigs, a rabbit and a leopard gecko) in a suburban split level ranch located on the outskirts of Rochester, NY. TJ spent 20 years in the field of government IT before shifting his career path towards procurement. Learning why/how things work, “pushing buttons” and “stirring the pot” (instigating) have always been inherent weaknesses for Mr. Seitz so administrating computers and contracts within large bureaucracies comes natural for him. While working full time, TJ also attended college part time (and sometimes full time). To keep himself (relatively speaking) sane he majored and minored in non-technology subjects, earning a BA in English with a writing concentration from Saint John Fisher College and a MA in Social Policy Empire State College. He studied with George Saunders and Judith Kitchen (though neither teacher would probably remember him). Distractions like kicking virtual wasp’s nests on BITNET Listservs (predecessors to social networking sites like Facebook), soliciting donations for a Panty Alter fund and hanging out with a heavily medicated professional drummer named Dirtbag interfered with TJ’s ability to write anything particularly noteworthy for either class. He also attended a workshop at the Omega Institute mentored by Marge Piercy and Ira Wood. In reality the stable full time jobs have been serving as functional fronts for TJ’s secret life as a writer. They provided him with money to pay his bills and experiential material to write about. The down side of working in IT and going to college was that he did not have a lot of time to devote to writing and publishing. Adding a problematic first marriage, babies and divorce to the mix did not help much either. TJ’s essays and letters have been printed in both local and national publications. His poetry has been published both United States and England.

That picture isn't me. It's my much-loved Border Collie bitch, who I lost to a spinal tumour in April 2011. She deserves this memorial. I was born a very, very long time ago, very close to my mother in England. Now I live in Wales, which isn't England but is part of the UK. I've written all sorts of stuff, but mostly science fiction. It's sort of believable sci-fi - maybe it can't happen today, but might tomorrow, you know? The sci-fi novels are all on the theme of 'first contact' and the first one is being given away free. You'll have to pay for the others. Sorry. I've got other novels, short stories and things that are supposed to be funny too but whether they are is your decision, right? Some of the books are based on real incidents - I know they are, because they happened to me. There are five in total, I've released two, two are being tidied up and the last one won't be finished for a while yet. If you read one, remember it all happened to me and that I don't mind being laughed at. I'm used to it. A while back I released a free book, 'Top Of The Shop'. (If you're a writer you might want to read it. I'll say no more.) I've since released another one, 'Tea, Drums And Speed'. So now the first sci-fi novel is free, 'Top Of The Shop' is free, and there's a free volume of short stories. I must be mad, giving this stuff away. Mind you, it hasn't stopped me giving away a book of political thoughts. If you're from Wales, or British, or even interested in Welsh politics, it might be worth reading. There's also a free book about some films that appeal to me. You might find it interesting but I thought it would be a bit cheeky to want money for it. Have it on me. There's one little thing I don't understand. Of everything I've put on this site, I think the stories in 'Swift Shifts' are the funniest, yet it's the title that's looked at least often. Why is that, do you think? After a gap of several months I've now added a new three-story volume of funny stories. To balance this, there's a thoroughly miserrable one on its way! A word or two about my pricing strategy might be worthwhile. A lot of people on this site (and I apologise if I've got this wrong) quote prices that are just a bit cheaper than you'd see in a bookstore. I don't do that. Ebooks don't have production or distribution costs, so why should you, the book buyer, have to pay even a tiny share of something that doesn't exist? Isn't it better to spend, say, $3 on three little books than on just one? I want you to enjoy what I've written, and at a realistic cost to you that I can live with. Simple, isn't it? I'll add to this from time to time - there's no point saying everything at once, is there? You'd have no need to come back, would you?

I started writing after I earned my Master’s Degree at NYU in 1984. I was 46 years old. After a decade of writing history articles for popular and scholarly magazines, the University of Utah Press published my first non-fiction book about the military post traders of America: PEDDLERS AND POST TRADERS: THE ARMY SUTLER ON THE FRONTIER(1992). It received 5-star ratings from historians. Publishers, however, showed no interest in my historical fiction, so I started my own publishing company, Kingfisher Books, through which I published trade paperbacks about individuals and events that helped shape the character of the modern West: THE YELLOWSTONE, FOREVER!(1998), the true story of the five men who helped to create our first national park; HEARTBREAK AND HEAVEN, a frontier-period historical,; and a trade paperback version of my Peddlers book. Recently (2011)I completed a historical biography of America’s highest-paid and most controversial artist of the 1800s, Albert Bierstadt. I worked from 1,000 pages of notes and I followed Bierstadt’s footsteps through Europe for 30 days. OTHER: In 2000, I started an action-mystery series based on my years as a counter intelligence agent in the 1960s. They are light, fast-paced, humorous, and feature two well-etched characters who get involved in national issues like corporate espionage, land use issues, designer drugs, child pornography, and so forth. PAST CAREERS:I have been a counter-intelligence agent attached to NATO in the 1960s, a divisional V.P. for Levi Strauss & Co., and owner/manager of a guest ranch in the Rockies. For the past 20 years I have been an author and an artist.
