Willy's Magic by J M Naszady Willy's Magic by J M Naszady Jan. 28, 2012 $4.99 35250 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
J. M. Naszady is a native Californian. She was born in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. After beginning her undergraduate education at the University of California Santa Barbara campus, she decided that biology wasn't exactly what she had in mind, although going to school at the beach was pretty cool! She transferred to UC Berkeley, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry with an emphasis in Wildlife Management. Then she had a series of adventures during which she cruised timber, searched for rare plants, trapped and banded Scrub jays, and rode a dirt bike while doing a songbird survey. She encountered such hazards as poison oak, ground hornets, and lightning. But there is nothing like the awe of standing in a pine forest with the pungent odor prickling your nose and the sun warming your face, watching a Pileated woodpecker crawl into its nest cavity, or catching a glimpse of a mountain lion crossing the road (from the safety of a moving vehicle!) Then she drove herself to Arizona to work for the U. S. Forest Service, because it sounded like a good idea. She met her husband, and after spending a couple of years in Colorado working for the National Park Service, they settled in northern California and raised three children. The next series of adventures included diapers, Sesame Street, trips to the beach, teaching Kindergarten, camping in a tent, and sharing a house with teenagers. The hazards included fevers, temper tantrums, and general mayhem. But there is nothing like the joy of holding your newborn infant for the first time, watching your child play a musical instrument, hit a home run, perform on a stage, or wear a cap and gown to accept a diploma! Her next adventure turned out to be teaching Middle School. She never saw that coming, but it was surprisingly fun for her, and only occasionally traumatic for her students. The hazards included frustrated students, frustrated parents, and lots of paper-grading. But there is nothing like the thrill of facing thirty expectant faces, all wondering what's next, or witnessing a young person achieve what they didn't think was possible! After decades of writing stories and shoving them in a drawer, a novel magically appeared. Motivation for this most recent adventure was provided by National Novel Writing Month, sponsored by the Office of Letters and Light in Berkeley, California. The hazards of writing include eyestrain, sore muscles, writer's block, and wondering if you are spending all your time on something no one but you will read. But there is nothing like the satisfaction of creating characters that you care about, and seeing your hard work completed. A sequel to Willy's Magic is coming soon!

I DOn't REMEMBER by Nelson V. Brasil I DOn't REMEMBER by Nelson V. Brasil Dec. 21, 2011 $3.99 26710 words Sample 5%
Author bio:
I was born, Nelson Vieira Brasil, in San Jose California on August 12th 1984. Being the first generation in my family born in the United States. I am full-blooded Portuguese, my family hails from the small island of São Jorge, Açores. The Açores islands can be found in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, there are nine islands in all, and they are all a part of Portugal. I grew up in San Jose constantly surrounded by my many uncles and aunts. To this day, most of my uncles, aunts, and cousins are within a 5-minute drive from my house. We get together during the week for dinner, and sometimes during the weekend for birthday parties, or to just play some cards. I love my family, and would be lost without them. My parents are at the top of my heroes list. Both come from humble beginnings. Both have menial education, but have flourished to great heights in their lifetime. I would consider my parents to be great successes. They came to this country with little to nothing, and have worked and earned everything they own. They raised two children the right way, instilling values, and morals in them. They taught us the difference from right and wrong, and gave us the trust and confidence to make decisions on our own. They always encourage us to reach for our dreams, and would stop at nothing to support our means to achieving them. If I could become half the success my parents are, I will be happy. Now that family and all that jazz are out of the way, let me tell you about why I write. I write because it brings me joy. It allows me to openly express my emotions and inspirations. It alleviates my stress, and empowers my confidence. It gives me an outlet to vent frustrations, or to praise successes. It allows me to let it all out, instead of bottling it up inside. I’ve been writing poetry and short stories since middle school. In high school, I began thinking that I wanted to write fulltime or at least become an English teacher so that I could be around reading and writing all the time. As I began college, I continued to write, and finally, began writing my first novel. The pride I felt from finishing my first novel is inexplicable. Then tragedy struck, my clumsiness caused me to tip over a glass of water onto the keyboard of my laptop. I lost everything on my hard drive. To say I was devastated is an understatement. I felt like I lost an arm or a leg. But with encouragement from family and friends I set out to write the same novel. I DOn’t REMEMBER, is finally in print. Hopefully it is the first of many more to come. Aside from writing, I enjoy doing many other things. Some of which include watching movies, reading, playing and watching sports, going to the lake with friends, gambling, and playing music. There many other things I enjoy doing but I wont bore you with the rest. My goal is to keep writing, even if I don’t sell a single book, it doesn’t matter to me. All that matters is that I write, and publish my works. My wish is that my writing brings out an emotion from the reader. Any emotion, happiness, sadness, anger, as long as it brings a rise to someone then I feel as though I have accomplished my goal.

The Tapu Garden of Eden by Robert Philip Bolton The Tapu Garden of Eden by Robert Philip Bolton Oct. 31, 2011 $3.99 28568 words Sample 15%
Author bio:
I was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1945. After a successful career in the advertising business I began freelance writing in 1983 and have been a self-employed writer ever since. Gradually I reduced my commercial writing and for the last few years have dedicated myself to my own work, preferring to write fiction mostly (but not only) about New Zealand and New Zealanders. I love all good writing from all eras; my biggest influences have been Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield for their insights and purity of text, Lytton Strachey for his precision and clarity, and Beatrix Potter for her charm. Other favourites include Shakespeare, of course, Colette, Fitzgerald, Forster, Hemmingway, Isherwood, Joyce, Milne, Waugh and many others. My other interests lie firmly in the arts: art, music, opera, ballet and the theatre. On the other hand I also love rugby league and have supported the New Zealand Warriors since their foundation in 1995. I enjoy gardening and playing the saxophone. My wife, who is also a writer, and I live in Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand.

Author bio:
I grew up on the grounds of Larned State Hospital, where my father was its dentist. That was interesting. I went to The University of Kansas during the tumultuous 1960s. That was interesting, too. For the first half of my adult career I worked in newspaper journalism. You couldn't call that boring. I won my share of honors, twice winning the award for investigative reporting from the William Allen White School of Journalism at KU. For the second half of my career I was Director of University Relations at The University of Kansas Medical Center. There were some boring times, but the exciting episodes made up for it. I retired at the end of 2010 from The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, where I was its media relations officer. You see, my degree from KU was not in journalism, but in art history. Unfortunately, my father died when I was 21 so I couldn't make him eat his words about that art history degree not being worth anything. I've had stints living in Italy and in Japan. During all this time I've been putting words on paper, creating fiction. My works don't fit into neat genres, unless that rather new genre "quirky" applies. And each work is quirky in its own way. What that means for me is that in each work is evidence of a deep search within myself. Sometimes it's scary what you find in there. I'm semi-retired now in Kansas City, keeping busy with a lot of things, among them promoting my fiction and creating new works. That search within yourself never ends.
